The Madiba Trust was registered in 1998 at the time of Balloon farm’s return to the community, and comprises 187 members. The farm consists of 163ha of land, 30ha are under irrigation of which 5ha are currently utilised, and the rest is dryland farming. The farm has the potential to be commercially viable once the irrigation system is revamped and the farm manager trained with the help of a mentor. TechnoServe believe that once fully operational the farm can employ in excess of 100 people and generate revenues of about R1,5m to 2m annually.
