The LeBoheme farm, owned by
the Calais Community Property Association (CCPA), is 450ha
in extent, of which 287ha are of arable land. The CCPA is
made up of 383 members, part of whom form the 28 members of
the Bophelong Farmers Co-operative, which leases 28ha from
the CCPA. Bophelong has been operating on a two year lease
arrangement from the CCPA. TechnoServe believe that the farm
has the potential to generate revenues in excess of R3m and
employ in excess of 150 people once fully operational. This
potential to become commercially viable will only be reached
however, once a long term lease and beneficiation plan
between Bophelong and the CCPA is developed and accepted,
and finance to revamp the whole farming operations is
secured.
